The purpose of the Ball State University chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta is to encourage superior scholastic achievement among students in their first year of a four or five year program at Ball State, to promote a continued high standard of learning, and to assist students in recognizing and developing meaningful goals for their unique roles in society.

In order to be eligible, a student is required to obtain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average while carrying at least 12 hours during the first semester at Ball State, or to attain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average at the end of the second semester while a full-time student. Students who have attained the 3.5 cumulative at some time during their first year and later fall below this average are still eligible for membership.

The dues are $30, $20 of which goes to Nationals and $10 of which is used to support local chapter activities. Some activities the Ball State chapter of ALD is involved in include a booth at Little Kin Weekend, Homecoming Activities, General Meetings/Pizza Parties, and various other things. For more information on upcoming activities, see the Calandar of Events or e-mail us at aldbsu@yahoo.com.

One of the most common questions recieved from prospective members is, "What kind of time commitment will I be getting myself into if I join?" There are Executive Board meetings on Mondays, usually every other week. The date and time of the next meeting can be found at the What's New page, or in the minutes. While other members are not required to attend, everyone is welcome. Members are not required to participate in the activities, either, but it is strongly encouraged and everyone is welcome. The answer to the time commitment question is this: you choose how much time you put into ALD.

We also get several questions about the scholarship we offer. The scholarship is for $250, and the application is sent with the invitation to join ALD. The application, as well as a letter of recommendation, is due along with your Member Profile and Hometown News Announcement (if you choose to do so).

If you are thinking about applying for an Executive Board position (which, when applicable, will be included with aforementioned items) you may find this helpful:
    Alpha Lambda Delta Officer's Responsibilites

President: The president of Alpha Lambda Delta is responsible for overseeing the entire operation of the organization and organizing the committee network. The bulk of his/her duties involves bringing matters to the attention of other officers, arranging meetings, and keeping the administrative liaison in the Office of Student Programs involved in and aware of what the chapter is doing. Applicants for this office must be willing to work closely and frequently with the Office of Student Programs which will entail many trips to the Student Center and must be willing to sacrifice many hours during the winter and spring semesters aiding the chairpersons with the initiation process.

Vice President: The vice president is to aid the president in the above mentioned areas of responsibility and may take direct control over the committee network. The vice president is also in charge of the scholarship given in April to one or more new initiates.

Secretary: The secretary is the communication link in the organization. He/she is responsible for informing officers about the meetings and keeping accurate records of all business conducted at such meetings. In most cases he/she will receive the correspondence of the chapter and respond promptly.

Treasurer: The treasurer of Alpha Lambda Delta has a large responsibility. Due to the fact that membership is so large, there is a large flow of cash that must be recorded promptly after each membership drive and careful attention must be paid to budgeting and payment of bills for the spring initiation ceremony. The treasurer must be available to check periodically for bills coming into the Office of Student Programs, which indicates that a great deal of time is involved.

Service/Activities: Services and Activities has recently been combined. Co-chairs are responsible for setting dates and planning activities for the members of Alpha Lambda Delta in both the spring and the fall semester, and also planning and scheduling of service projects or other philanthropic activities.

Initiation: The initiation committee chairperson is responsible for planning the initiation ceremonies in the fall and spring semesters which includes contacting a guest speaker and organizing the program of the initiation.

Membership: The membership committee chairperson is responsible for organizing mass e-mails throughout each semester that inform the members on activities, initiations, and other organizational news. The membership chair is also responsible for updating the Ball State Alpha Lambda Delta web page.

Publicity: The publicity chairperson oversees the publicizing of events involving both active membership and new initiates. He/she works actively with The Ball State Daily News and is responsible for informing the campus about Alpha Lambda Delta.

Good luck, and we look forward to having you along!
